Wicked Glinda Elphaba

Description

I've been a fan of Wicked the Musical although I've never seen the play, I've seen clips of the play from YouTube. I like the song Popular since it shows the great difference between Elphaba and Glinda. What each one hold dear to their heart, it is a very happy song and it is Glinda's song. Elphaba is just going along with Glinda in her "project". You can really see that Elphaba is not enjoying herself and just doesn't want to antagonize Glinda.

Here Elphaba is in Glinda's room, which shows that Glinda is rich, she has all this fancy stuff, and coordinated to her favorite color, PINK. I know Elphaba is uncomfortable. Glinda is more like a southern ballerina, Stepford Wives type. Elphaba in contrast is totally introverted to herself trying not to catvh any attention.

I've been depressed lately ( 3 weeks) and I have to bring myself back from the dumps and I thought why not do a happy piece.

I absolutely adore the overall style of this piece. At first glance, it seems a bit much, a bit inappropriate for the musical the scene comes from. But then one had to remember *that* scene, that song. And the cartoonish, almost a tad overly cheerful feel this piece has reflects the mood of the song sung at this scene perfectly! I also like the contrast between Elphaba's expression and Galinda's; the latter looks absolutely overcome with glee, while the former's joy is a bit more muted, though perhaps not quite as reluctant as it could be in order to stay true to the scene. Finally, I'd like to say how much I love the faint pink stream of magic coming from Galinda and wrapping around Elphaba. That was a GREAT way to symbolize the fact that Galinda did not merely see this as giving advise, but quite literally imparting her own popularity onto Elphaba, if only some.
